Spiritual Habit — We Pursue God Together
Most couples think of intimacy in terms of physical closeness, but spiritual intimacy is just as important. It is the experience of inviting God into your relationship and pursuing Him together.
Spiritual intimacy grows when couples:
- Share faith practices such as prayer, Scripture reading, worship, and serving together.
- Consider reading a devotional book together. I have written one called Tools for a Great Marriage Devotional.
- Invest in each other’s spiritual growth by encouraging one another and talking about what God is teaching you.
- Each spouse completes one of these sentences. This often creates meaningful conversations that rarely happen in everyday life.
- “One way I see God working in your life is…”
- “One spiritual strength I appreciate in you is…”
- “One area I want to encourage you in is…”
- Each spouse completes one of these sentences. This often creates meaningful conversations that rarely happen in everyday life.
- Pray regularly together, even if it feels awkward at first. Couples who pray together often develop a deeper sense of connection and unity. Many couples discover that prayer need not be long to be meaningful.
- Thank God for one blessing.
- Share one concern.
- Ask for God’s help in one area.
- Pursue a common mission, aligning their lives around God’s purposes rather than simply managing daily responsibilities.
- Identify three ways God could use your marriage to bless others.
- Hospitality
- Mentoring younger couples
- Serving at church
- Supporting missionaries
- Caring for neighbors
- Encouraging struggling families

When a husband and wife intentionally grow closer to God together, they often find themselves growing closer to one another as well. Shared spiritual intimacy creates a deeper bond that helps a marriage stay anchored through both everyday life and life’s unexpected storms.
